From Roman author, Pliny, who believed that nature was divine, to forest bathing; from bracing Skegness to social prescription, we know the outdoors and the natural world is good for us. There are multitudes of studies and statistics that demonstrate this to be the case. It is science!

Gardens can help us with depression, anxiety, ADHD, heart disease, high blood pressure and stress, but we don’t really need proof. Deep down, we all know that this is an undeniable truth.

A garden can be dynamic and vibrant but it can also be restful and regenerative, a place for peace and calm.

This garden invites you to awaken your senses gently; to take a moment to pause, reflect and breathe, to lie down and revitalise. A garden may be an artifice created by people but a garden is nature too: plants, soil, invertebrates, microbes, fungi and us. We are part of the biodiversity of a garden.

The Treefern Collective is made up of Mark Holman (The Palace Gardener), Charles Fox (artist and garden designer) and Alasdair Moore (The Lost Gardens of Heligan), who first joined forces to design and deliver the planting for the Critical Care Garden at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske. The inspiration and much of the funding for this garden was raised by Louella and Robin Hanbury-Tenison, alongside the NHS. The Lost Gardens of Heligan provided tree ferns and willing gardeners to do the planting in 2023 and they have done it again in 2025.
