You are invted to join us for our pop-up autumn self-drive visit to Manaton in Launceston and Hooper’s Barn in Altarnun on Tuesday 15th October at 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Manaton, Dunheved Road, Launceston PL15 9TF
This beautiful garden created over 50 years on the hill above Launceston has a fine selection of unusual and mature trees and shrubs. Separate rooms bounded by yew hedging are planted with herbaceous and flower borders with autumn and late summer colour in mind. An informal woodland area, a large productive vegetable and fruit garden complete this hidden gem on a level with the castle and sharing the views. Your hosts will be Cecilia and Peter Hodgson.

Directions: From the A30 take Western Road to the Town Centre. Take the third right and sharp hairpin bend right into Dunheved Road towards the Leisure Centre. Take the first left at Launceston College and left again into Windmill Hill. After approximately 400 yards, opposite the park gates, turn left into the lane with parking signed into the field.

Hooper’s Barn, West Carne, Altarnun PL15 7SP
A windswept, moorland garden, created from scratch 16 years ago, on the site of a farmyard at 900 feet. Subsoil, granites and broken concrete formed the basis of the garden with very little useable soil. Young trees and shrubs now surround the huge standing stones, with a swimming pond, pergola, vegetable garden, lawns and flower beds, which are now beginning to take shape. All the granite was dug on site and the soil was created by shredding and mulching. A small Cornish orchard, chickens and woodland area back on to the garden and the moor. Your hosts will be myself and my family, and Caroline Hooper (pm only).

Directions: From the A30, take the signs for Altarnun, Five Lanes and Trewint. Drive down through the village and take a sharp left turn directly after the church and large house. Keep going until a proper crossroads, then turn left and follow the road around two steep corners and over a small bridge. Continue taking the right fork and West Carne is the next habitation – not marked. We are in the middle on the left. Signs on the day for parking. Sat Nav is usually OK.

The cost of this self-drive visit is £10 for CGS members and £15 for non-members.

To reserve your place, please send your cheque, made payable to the Cornwall Garden Society, to me at Hooper’s Barn, West Carne, Altarnun PL15 7SP with your booking, including your email address and telephone number in case of any changes, and the need to divide attendees up into groups. This will save fiddling with money at two venues and enable us to provide the correct amount of cake (in the event of a landslide of applications!)
