Exuberant displays of Cornwall’s finest spring flowers and shrubs are the floral focus of the Cornwall Garden Society’s 2024 Spring Flower Show, sponsored by Cornish Lithium, Goonvean Group and the Cornwall Community Foundation.

This highlight of the horticultural year will be held at The Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th April 2024.

Vibrant new features will include an immersive Cornish Garden that showcases sustainable practices, a Grow Your Own space for all the family and Tipi Talks by national names and local luminaries, alongside an array of springtime surprises that will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Show’s organisers hope that people from across the county will rise to the challenge of creating a truly memorable celebration of Cornwall’s early spring by competing for its spectacular silverware.

“With 41 trophies for the taking, we encourage green-fingered gardeners, horticultural hotshots and nervous newbies alike to try their luck by entering their best blooms in the Competitive Classes, and dazzling showgoers with their exceptional quality and extraordinary variety,” says Show Director, Mark Holman, who has taken over the reins this year.

“With the deadline for horticultural entries on the horizon, on Friday 22nd March, now is the time to step out into your glorious Cornish gardens and consider which of your fabulous flora will be in peak condition on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th April when all entries need to be delivered to the Showground for staging and judging by the UK’s leading experts,” Mark adds.

Then, the process is simple, as Entries Secretary, Jessanda Farrant, explains: “Once you have decided which spring flowers and shrubs you wish to enter, take a look at the Schedule of Competitive Classes on the CGS website, check which classes your flowers and shrubs are eligible for, and then complete and submit the online entry form. It’s as easy as that.”

Entries for the Floral Art Classes follow the same process and deadline.

“With 149 classes for Ornamental Trees and Shrubs, Magnolias, Camellias, Rhododendrons, Daffodils, Herbaceous, Rhizomatous and other Bulbous Plants, Pot Plants and Alpines, including 14 classes in the Novice section, and nine Floral Art classes, why not take your chance and experience the thrill of winning one of our coveted trophies?” adds CGS Chairman, Martin Petherick.

Judges of the Horticultural Classes will include Tony Kirkham MBE VMH (Former Head of Arboretum, Gardens & Horticulture Services at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew); Jim Gardiner (Executive Vice President of RHS Garden Wisley); Gwynne Davies (RHS Judge and Bulb Committee member); Barry Stagg (The Daffodil Society); Rupert Eley (RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group and great grandson of Charles Eley, one of the founders of the Rhododendron Society in 1916); Jon Wheatley VMH (RHS judge for the Britain in Bloom UK Finals competition and Chair of South West in Bloom); camellia specialists, Jim Stephens and Jeremy Wilson, and award-winning Cornish garden designer, Kim Parish.

Michael Bowyer MBE (Past President of NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) and Maggi Murray (NAFAS Area Judge for Devon and Cornwall) will judge the Floral Art Classes.

You do not have to be a member of the Cornwall Garden Society to take part and all classes are free to enter. Upon receipt of your entry form, the CGS will provide you with an exhibitors’ number that will provide you with free entry to the Show.

If you would like to enter a plant that is not in flower by the deadline but is worthy of being shown, you are welcome to bring it to the Showground anytime up to midday on Friday 5th April. Subject to there being sufficient space on the respective display stand, it will be entered in the relevant competitive class.
