The Cornwall Garden Society’s 2021 Summer Flower Show has been cancelled in view of continuing Coronavirus-related restrictions.
The Society’s popular annual Spring Flower Show faced the same fate in March 2020 and 2021.
However, with the accelerated roll-out of the Government’s vaccination programme and the impact of national lockdowns on the rate of infection, the Trustees decided in January that the hazy days of Summer were suitably far off and all efforts were made to create a socially-distanced showcase for Cornwall’s Summer blooms.
This was scheduled to take place at The Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge on Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July.
“Whilst we all worked hard to replace daffodils with dahlias and camellias with crocosmia in the Schedule of Competitive Classes, and received widespread support from would-be exhibitors, national judges and horticultural traders to stage a Covid-secure Summer event, there are still too many imponderables as we head into our final planning phase, even though lockdown measures are being gradually eased,” explains CGS Show Chairman, Andrew Leslie. “As a charity that is committed to sharing horticultural knowledge and preserving Cornwall’s rich garden heritage for the future, it is important that we minimise financial risk to ensure that this continues.”
“As responsible event organisers, we have been monitoring the ongoing situation and planning in line with Government advice,” adds CGS Show Director, Dickie Trant. “With the welfare of our visitors, exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and members at the forefront of our minds, and the earliest possible date on which we may be free to gather without restriction being 21st June – less than a month before our Summer Flower Show was due to take place – the Trustees felt that the only sensible option was to make this decision now before any further expenditure was incurred by the Society and the many traders who had demonstrated their support by committing to attend.
“We will be making contact with all stakeholders in the coming days and thank everyone for their understanding. We are immensely grateful to our sponsors, Atkins Ferrie Wealth Management and the CGS Show Committee for their unstinting support, and now look forward to returning to The Royal Cornwall Showground for an ever-more exuberant celebration of Cornwall’s early Spring on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April 2022.”
