Upcoming Events

  • Day trip by coach to Marwood Hill Garden and Upper Gorwell House, Barnstaple

Located within a Devon valley, Marwood Hill Garden spans 20 acres with lakes, more than 20 champion trees, including Magnolia Marwood Spring and several eucalyptus, and National Collections® of astilbe, iris ensata and tulbaghia. Rich with year-round colour from plants, shrubs and trees, it is planted to encourage wildlife. Whilst exploring the bog garden and wandering round the lake, look out for kingfishers, butterflies and moths.

Upper Gorwell House is a four-acre garden that overlooks the Taw estuary. It enjoys a benign microclimate that allows rare and tender plants to flourish both in the open and in the Walled Garden. Its trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and alpines have been collected during expeditions to Chile and Sichuan, and from specialist nurseries. Please note that access to the level garden is via a steep slope.

  • Self-drive visit to Hidden Valley Gardens, Treesmill and Tregrehan, St Austell

Hidden Valley Gardens offer colourful, cottage-style planting across 3.5 acres in a secluded valley. Beds and borders are crammed with herbaceous perennials, shrubs and grasses. There is a potager for vegetables, herbs, soft fruit and cut flowers. This RHS Partner Garden, with several awards to its name, also provides diversity with a large wildlife pond, Japanese and Mediterranean areas, and a fernery.

Historic, family-run Tregrehan has an enviable location for a woodland garden at the head of St Austell Bay. Towering conifers from the early Victorian plant hunters combined with botanically-important recent planting result in more than 150 trees of champion status. This garden is a delight at any time. The old grain mill, walled garden and magnificent glasshouse are also wonderful spaces to enjoy.
